Garga Bhagavatham : Giriraj Khanda - Chapter 9
Description of the creation of Giriraj Govardhan
Bahulashwa says:- Lord of Sages! It is a great astonishing fact that
Govardhan is actually the King of mountains and is liked very much by Sri
Krishna. There is no other holy place equal to him either on this earth or in
heaven. Great one! You are the heart of Sri Hari. Hence please tell when
Giriraj emerged from the heart of Sri Krishna.
Sri Narada says:- King! Great One! Listen to the natural account of Golok,
this is related to the initial leelas of Sri Hari and this endows to humans all
the four purusharthas - that are Dharm, Arth, Kaam, and Moksh ( righteousness,
wealth, lust, and salvation). Bhagwan Sri Krishna, who is beyond prakruti
(nature) is capable of everything. He is devoid of Gunas(qualities) and is the
primordial soul without a beginning. His effulgence is facing inward. He is the
Lord, who is self-effulgent and is eternally blissful in the Self, whom even
the proudest and most calculable Lord of all Devatas, 'Kaal' cannot rule over.
Upon whom even 'Maya' cannot cast her spell, how can tatvas or gunas have any
effect on Him? King! Mind, chitta (mind-matter), intellect and ego can never
enter into Him. He, by His own resolve, manifested His own form as Saakar
Bhrahman (Brahman with form).
First
of all the mammoth 'Seshnaag' appeared which was as white as the stalk of a lotus.
On its lap, the most revered and greatest 'Golok' appeared, the devoted men who
attain Golok will never return to this earth. Then, from the feet of the Lord
of innumerable universes, the holiest Ganga appeared. King! thereafter, from
the left shoulder of Sri Krishna, the best of all rivers Sri Yamuna appeared,
who was shining with ornamental flowers just like a turban which is printed
with beautiful designs. After that, from both the ankles of Sri Hari, the
divine Raasmandal with precious gems and many types of decorative articles were
created. After this, from both shins of Sri Krishna, Nikunjas (thickets)
appeared which were having palaces, courtyards, lanes, and pavilions. The place
was filled with the sounds of cuckoo birds everywhere. It was embellished and
served with peacocks, bees, and many lakes which made the place full of
grandeur. From the two knees of Bhagawan, Sri Vrindavan, which is the best of
all forests was created. Along with this, from both femurs of the Paramatma,
Leela Sarovar appeared. From the hips of His body, the shining golden land
bedecked with precious gems was created and the hairs on his abdominal part
became the widespread Madhavi creepers. In those creepers, many kinds of birds
were making sounds. The humming bees were enhancing the beauty of the creepers.
Those creepers were bent with the weight of flowers and fruits just like the
girls of good lineage bend their heads with shyness and respect. Thousands of
lotus flowers emerged from the navel of Bhagawan and were shining here and
there in the lakes of Harilok. From the nostrils of Bhagawan, the most pleasant
and cool breeze emanated, and from the collar bones of His neck, the two cities
of Mathura and Dwaraka appeared.
From the two shoulders of Sri Hari
'Sreedama' and other eight councilors appeared. From the wrists, 'Nand' and
from the palms 'Upanand' appeared. From the core of Sri Krishna's shoulders,
all the 'Vrishbhanus' were created. All the Gopas were generated from the hair
of Sri Krishna. From Sri Krishna's mind, cows and bullocks appeared.
From His intellect grass and bushes were formed. From the left
shoulder of Bhagawan, a bright effulgence appeared from which Leela, Shree,
Bhudevi, Vraja, and many other beloveds of His were generated. Sri Radha who is
the most beloved of Bhagawan is known to some others as 'Leelavati' or 'Leela'.
From both the shoulders of Sri Radha, Her two friends 'Vishakha' and 'Lalita'
emerged. King of Kings! all the other gopis emerged from the hairs of Radha. In
this manner Madhusudan created Golok.
King! After creating His own world, the Lord
of innumerable universes, Paratpar, Paramatma, Parameshwar Paripoorna Bhagawan
Sri Hari graced that place along with His beloved Sri Radha. In that Golok, one
day at Raasamandal, where the sounds of anklets were reverberating, in the
canopy in the courtyard, which was dripping with drops of nectar flowing from
the Gem fruits and which was filled with the sweet aroma of honey flowing from
the Malathi creepers, there was the melodious sound of playing drums and
flutes. Beautiful girls were singing very sweetly, and with all these the
entire place was very attractive. In the middle of all the charming girls, Sri
Radha spoke to Sri Krishna, the Heartthrob of millions, in a dignified tone thus.
Sri Radha said:- Lord of the world! If You are pleased with my love in
Raas, I want to place a prayer of my heart before You.
Sri Bhagawan said:- Dear! Vameru!! Whatever wish is there in your heart, ask
me. Because of your love, I will fulfill your wish even if it is the most
impossible.
Sri Radha said:- In Vrindavan, on the banks of Yamuna river, in the divine forest
please create a secluded place which will be conducive for 'Raasras'. God of
Gods! this is my wish.
Sri Narada says:- King! Then saying 'so be it', Bhagawan thinking about an apt
place for secret leela, glanced at His heart with His lotus-like eyes. And in
front of all the gopis, a bright light in the size of a seedling emerged from
the heart of the Lord. It fell on the Raasbhoomi and grew like a mountain. The
entire mountain was full of precious gems. It was very beautiful with
waterfalls and caves. Ashoka, Kadamba, Bakul, and other trees along with other
creepers were making it even more beautiful. Filled with Mandaar and groups of
Kunda trees, on that mountain different kinds of birds were singing sweetly.
Kind of Videha! In just a moment that mountain grew as broad as one lakh yojanas
and as long as crore yojanas like Seshnag. Its height became fifty crore
yojanas. It stood like the King of elephants occupying an area of fifty crore
yojanas. Millions of peaks as broad as crore yojanas appeared on it looking
majestic. Amongst those peaks, Govardhan appeared majestic like a palace that
stands out amidst small houses.
Some
learned men call it 'Govardhan' and some others call it 'Shathashring'. Even
after being so huge, it started growing further by its own wish. By this Golok
was scared and there was commotion all round. Seeing this Sri Hari got up and
knocked on it with His own hands and said ' Hey! Why are you growing
uncontrollably? You have covered the entire Lok? Do you not want this Lok to be
here?' Saying this Sri Hari pacified it and stopped its growth. Seeing that
beautiful mountain appear, Sri Radha was very pleased. She started gracing that
secluded place with Sri Hari.
In
this manner, Giriraj, actuated by Sri Krishna came to Vrajmandal. This is full
of all holy waters. This great mountain which is full of forests with creepers
is dark in color like the clouds and is liked by all Devatas. To the west of
Bharath, in the middle of 'Shaalmali' island, Govardhan took birth from the
womb of the wife of 'Dronachal'. Sage Pulasthya brought him to Vrajmandal. King
of Videha! I have already told you about the coming of Govardhan. If he grew as
he did in Golok, he would obstruct the whole world. For this reason, Govardhan,
the son of Drona was cursed that he will grow smaller day by day.
