Garga Bhagavatham : Golok khanda - Chapter 1

Shounik-Garg discussion; Description of differences in the avatars of LORD VISHNU at the behest of king Bhulashwa BY Shrii Narada

Once the epitome of knowledge and the brightest sage, Garga who was as bright as the Sun in yoga sastra visited Naimisharanya to meet Shounika. Upon seeing the great sage he got up and prostrated before him and offered obeisance and welcomed him.

Shounika said:- The darkness inside the humans in family life is enlightened by great ones like yourself and not even by the brightness of the SUN. He asks a question Lord  I have a doubt ' How many types of incarnations of Lord Vishnu are there?" Please clear this doubt in my mind.

Sri Garga says:- The question which relates to the avatars of the Lord is a good one. This will benefit all those who ask this and those who tell this and also those who listen to this.In this connection there is a historic story by listening to which the worst sins will be washed away and will be forgiven.

In Mithilapuri there was a famous and powerful king called Bahulashwa who was a great devotee of Sri Krishna .The king was devoid of any pride. He was peace loving and kind. One day Narada descended from heaven and landed at his palace, The King offered him a seat and fell at his feet asked him question with folded hands.

Janka says:- O great one, the Lord Vishnu who is above nature and without a beginning and is omnipresent and also is the very soul of all, how can He take the form of a human body and how can He be contained in a human body? Please enlighten me on this.

Narada says:- To safe guard the Cow the Sages,Devas,Holy Brahmins and Vedas, He takes the form of human by HIS magical powers. His body is not a natural one but a magical one.He is just like an actor who is not affected by his actions but only the viewers are affected. The other living beings are affected by His actions He is not affected at all. There is not an iota of doubt about this.

Janaka asks:- How many forms of incarnations of Lord Vishnu are there to protect the living beings?

Narada says:- Vyasa maharishi is a fraction of he Lord(Amshamsh), Brahma is piece of Himself (Amsha), charged up (Avesh). Artful, Full and Complete fulfillment. These are the six types of avatars. Of these the sixth one (fulfillment) avatar is the Sri Krishna avatar. Marichi is a fraction of the lord, Brahma is a part of the Lord, Kapila and Kurma are Kala avatar, Parashurama is avesha avatar, Nrisimha Rama Hari Vaikunta Yagna and Nara Narayana are poorna avatar.Only Sri Krishna is the Paripoorna avatar(fulfillment)

The Lord of infinite worlds comes to Gokul Dham. He who is the part of the creator Brahma looks after the creations of the Lord Vishnu. He is the most intelligent ruler of the kingdom. Lord Vishnu, who descends on the earth does his duties and disappears. Like this, He appears in different Yugas as Parsurama,Rama,Vasudeva. Pradyumna and others, who do their duties and return. Sri Krishna is the only avatar where he does crores of good things. He is the only Complete One(Paripurna avatar). Hence I completely surrender to Lord Krishna.

Hearing this the King is overwhelmed and tears of joy roll down his cheeks. He wipes his tears and asks Narada.

King Bahulahwa asks:- Great sage, why does the omnipresent Lord after coming from Golok dham is residing in Dwarakapuri in Bharat? What is the reason for this?  Please describe the Golok dham and please enlighten me about His deeds. A human being is able to attain the feet of the Lord after doing holy tours and deep penance for hundreds of lives. When can I become the slave of all the slaves of Sri Krishna? When it is not easy for even the Devas to see Him, when can HE be seen by me?

Narada says:- Great king you are very fortunate to be such a great devotee of Sri Krishna. To give you darshan, the lover of his devotees the Lord will come to you very soon.Even though Sri Krishna is residing in Dwaraka, He is thinking of you and his staunch devotees. Oh how fortunate are the sacred souls on this earth!
