Garga Bhagavatham : Giriraj Khanda - Chapter 3
Lifting of the Govardhan Pura by Sri Krishna and the subsequent protection of the people of Vraj from the destructive thunderstorms created by the fury of Indra.
Sri Narada says:- Hearing from me about the cancellation of his worship and
the celebration of Govadhan's worship, the King of Devas Indra became very
angry. He summoned a group of clouds, whose knot is opened only at the time of
pralaya(total annihilation) and sent them to destroy Vraj immediately. Soon
after receiving the order, the unusual colored clouds set out with angry roars.
Among them some were black, some were yellow and some were green. Some of them
were shining like red insect Indragop. Some were white like camphor, some had
the radiance of blue lotus. This way the multi-colored clouds pelted rain
similar to the size of drunk elephants. Some restless clouds rained drops in
the size of an elephant's trunk. Stone blocks in the size of mountain tops
started falling there with great force. Along with this, a great hurricane
started blowing, which was blowing away trees and houses. King of Mithila! The
sound of total annihilation like clouds and falling hailstones filled the land
of Vraj. That threatening sound reverberated in the entire universe including
the seven worlds as well as the hell, there was a legendary distraction and the
stars started falling to the ground, Now the prime gopas along with their
families, sending the children ahead came to the palace of Nand, to save their
own lives. Seeking refuge, they approached Balaram and Sri Krishna, and after
offering their greetings to them, started telling thus.
Gopas said:- Great armed Ram! Ram! and Lord of Vraja Krishna! Krishna! save
your people from this great catastrophe created by Indra, save us. As You said,
we gave up worshiping Indra and celebrated the worship of Govardhan, because of
this Indra is greatly angered. Now please tell us quickly what we have to do.
Sri Narada says:- King! Seeing Gopis, Gopas, their children, and the cows
with their calves in great anguish, Bhagawan said without any fear thus.
Sri Bhagawan said:- Do not be afraid. All of you with your kin go to the base
of Giriraj, who has accepted your worship, He will save all of you.
Sri Narada says:- King! Saying thus, Sri Hari went near Govardhan and
uprooting that mountain and lifted it very easily. Just like a boy lifts cow
dung or an elephant uproots a lotus with its trunk, in the same way, the
generous and kind Lord, the Son of Sri Nandraj was looking graceful by lifting
Govardhan mountain. Then He told the gopas, "Mother! Father! All people of
Vraj! All of you, along with all your things, all your wealth and cows assemble
under the protection of Girraj. This is the only place where there will be no
danger from Indra. Listening to these words of Sri Hari, all of them assembled
under Govardhan along with their cows and all materials. Obtaining Sri
Krishna's permission, along with Sri Balaram all the friends and cowherd boys
used their canes to hold Govardhan in place. Seeing water gushing under the
mountain, Bhagawan mentally thinking of Sudarshan Chakra and Sesha ordered the
prevention of the gushing water. Being stationed on top of the mountain, the
Sudarshan Chakra consumed all the rain that was falling on the mountain.
Seshnag encircling the mountain stopped all the water like shores of the ocean
that stops the water flowing further. Sri Hari, holding the mountain stood
still for one week and all the gopas were sitting like hens looking at Sri
Krishnachandra. Thereafter, riding on the intoxicated Airavat, along with his
army the agitated king of Devas, Indra came to Vrajmandal. He made efforts to
fire his thunderbolts from a distance with the intention of destroying
Vrajmandal. But Madhav immobilized his arms along with the thunderbolt. As a
result, Indra got scared. Just as an elephant runs away after being hurt by a
lion, in the same manner, Indra ran away with all the additional forces and all
the Devatas immediately. King of Kings! at the same time, sunrise took place.
Clouds dispersed here and there. The speed of winds stopped and very little
water remained in the rivers. There was absolutely no wetness on the earth. The
sky became clear. Animals and birds became comfortable all around. After
obtaining permission from Bhagawan, all the gopas taking their cows slowly came
out from under the mountain. After that, the bearer of Govardhan told His
friends '"You may all go". Then they all said, "We are holding
the mountain with our strength, you only go out." Seeing them talk like
this the great-hearted holder of Govardhan, Sri Hari left half the weight of the
mountain on the boys. The helpless weak Gopa boys fell being unable to bear the
weight. Then helping all the boys to stand up and in front of their eyes placed
Govardhan mountain in its original place. At that time important gopis and
gopas worshipped the son of Nand with sandal and yellow rice and offered Him
curds and milk and realizing that He is the Supreme God prostrated before Him.
King! Nand, Yashoda, Rohini, Balaram, and other elderly gopas embraced Sri
Krishna and offered Him wealth and being overcome by kindness, blessed Him.
Thereafter, praising Him profusely the entire residents of Vraj sang, danced,
and played music in front of Sri Hari, and letting Him lead the way, they all
returned home. At the same time, all the Devatas filled with happiness rained
beautiful flowers from the sky, and a group of main Gandharvas and Sidhas sang
the greatness of GovardanDhari Krishna
