Garga Bhagavatham : Golok Khanda - Chapter 19
Tying of Damodar Krishna to the mortar; Redemption of the Yamalarjuna trees.
Sri Narada says:- Once, all the Gopis were singing about the playfulness of Gopal and were churning curds in their houses, all over Gokul. In the home of Nanda, Yashoda woke up early and began to churn curds in a pot. Hearing the sound of the churner, the son of Nand came there excitedly to get butter and started dancing with the sweet sound of his anklets. Playfully, Sri Krishna was going round and round his mother dancing and was being very attractive. The bells attached to the cord around his waist were also emanating sweet sounds. He was talking very sweetly to his mother and was asking for fresh butter. When he did not get what he wanted he got angry and with a piece of stone broke the churning pot and ran away. Yashoda also chased him. He was only an arm's distance away from her, even then she could not catch him. He who is unattainable even to the greatest of sages, how could he come into the grasp of his mother?
King! Even then Sri Hari, who showers His
affection towards His devotees, allowed Himself to be caught by his mother. She
caught hold of her young son and started to tie him to a grinding stone. She
took many long ropes to tie him up and she found the ropes were not long enough
to tie him. How can the Supreme Lord, who is beyond nature and The One, who can
not be bound even by all the three qualities of nature, be bound by a mere
rope? When Yashoda got tired of trying to bind Him, she sat down. She gave up
the idea of binding Him. Then the self-moving Lord Sri Krishna, even though He
is self-controlled, He let Himself be bound by his mother. When such kindness
of the Lord cannot be got by even wisest of men who have renounced the world,
then how can those who are still interested in the world obtain it? Because of
the great devotion (bhakti) of His mother, He got himself bound by her. Great
King! This is why The Lord gives moksha (salvation) to those who worship Him
but He does not give them devotion (bhakti). At that time many Gopis came
there. They saw that the pot containing curds was broken and the son of Nanda
was very scared and was tied to the grinding stone with many ropes. Seeing this
they felt great pity and they told Yashoda thus
Gopis said:- Queen of Nanda! Your
little son always breaks pots in our houses many times, even then out of love
we never scold him. Queen of Vraj, Yashoda! There is no compassion in your
heart, you have become very cruel. Just because one pot was broken, you not
only scolded him but also tied him to the grinding stone.
Sri Narada says:- King! Yashoda did not reply to the Gopis. She went about
performing her domestic chores. Meanwhile, when he got an opportunity, Sri
Krishna along with other cowherd boys went to the banks of the Yamuna, dragging
the grinding stone along with him. There were two huge trees on the banks of
the Yamuna, which were attached. Those two were Arjun trees. Lord Krishna who
was tied with a rope (Damodar) to the grinding stone by his mother, laughingly
went between the two trees. The stone got stuck between the trees, even then
SriKrishna pulled the stone with great force, and the trees along with their
roots fell on the ground.
The trees fell with a great thunderous noise. Two Devas emerged
from the trees just like fire comes out of wood. The Devas went around Damodar
with reverence and bowed before Him, with their crowns touching His feet. They
respectfully stood in front of Sri Hari and said thus.
Both Devas said:- Achyutha! By your darshan both of us have attained
salvation from this world. Hari! From now, we will never disregard any of your
true devotees(bhaktas). You are the epitome of kindness. Safeguarding of the
world is your nature. Our salutations to You, Damodara, Krishna, and Govinda.
Sri Narada says:- King! Prostrating before Sri Krishna, the two Devas went
away towards in the northern direction. At the same time, Nanda along with all
Gopas, who were scared came there and asked the boys of Vraj, "Without any
tornado or water how did both these trees fall?". Tell us quickly. Then
all the boys who lived in Vraj spoke thus.
The boys told:- This Krishna is the
one who pulled down both the trees. Two men emerged from the trees and were
standing here, prostrated before him, and just now went in the northern
direction. Glowing light was coming out of their bodies.
Sri Narada says:- the elderly Gopas did not believe the cowherd boys. Nanda
released the boy who was tied with a rope and took him is his arms and began to
smell the child lovingly. King! Nanda screamed at his wife and gave hundred
cows to the Brahmins as donation.
Bahulashwa said:- Deva Anmng Rishis! Who were those two men with divine
brilliance? Please tell me this. For what sin did they become Yamalarjun trees?
Sri Narada says:- Those two were the sons of Kubera. Their names were
Nalakoobar and Manigreev. One day they went Nandavana and stayed on the banks
of river Mandakini. Girls there, were singing their praise. Being intoxicated
with all the praise, the men disrobed and began moving around in a naked state.
Firstly, was their youth and secondly, they were intoxicated with their wealth.
At the time a sage named Deval, who was an erudite scholar of the Vedas came
there. Seeing the nudity of Kubera's sons, he said "Wickedness is in your
nature. Both of you have lost your minds."
Sri Deval further said:- Both of you are like trees which have no feelings and are
shameless. You are very proud of your wealth, hence both of you become trees on
this earth for a period of hundred divine years. At the end of the Dwapara age,
at Vraj in Mathura town in Bharath and on the banks of river Yamuna, you will
get the sight (darshan) of the Supreme (paripoornatham), Lord Sri Krishna. At
that time you will regain your original form.
Sri Narada says:- King! Like this, by the curse of Devala, Nalakoobar and
Manigreev became trees.
